Brockwell Bone, Concerned Citizen
It is no secret that Senator Obama and Senator McCain agreed, in writing, to stick with “public financing” for their campaigns for the presidential race.
John McCain, the republican candidate, stood by their written agreement to accept federal financing for his campaign. Barrack Obama, the democratic candidate, did not follow through with the agreement.
This upsets me … this politician is not yet in office and is already “going back” on his agreement, written agreement. What will he go back on once he’s elected?
Sidenote, presidential candidates can promise lots of things, but this great country has three bodies in the Legislative branch: the President (with veto power), the Senate, and the House of Representatives. It takes all three or a seriously committed 2 to pass new laws.
To put a positive spin on this, it is reported that in September 2008, John McCain raised only half the money of Barrack Obama.
This proves that money does not buy a political office. Let’s break this down, based on the September numbers (sorry, I did not research other months of the campaign – post them if you have them), John McCain used 25% of the total monies raised to elect our next president, Barrack Obama had the resources of 75%.
Yet, today’s Rasmussen Report (November 3, 2008), shows 52% of the vote for Senator Obama and 46% of the vote for Senator McCain.

% Money |
% Vote |
Financial Factor |
John McCain |
25% |
46% |
.54 |
Barrack Obama |
75% |
52% |
1.44 |
Please pardon the crudeness of these figures, but what I am trying to illustrate is that it costs John McCain 54 “cents” per percentage of vote and Barrack Obama 1 “dollar” and forty-four “cents” per percentage of vote. Again, this is based on September’s figures for campaign finances and the Rasmussen Report for November 3, 2008.
So is the McCain campaign spending their money more effectively? Driving more votes per dollar?
Are voters sticking to parties? And campaign finance unnecessary (to a degree)?
Or does John McCain have better ideas, values, and points of view on the issues?
